Meet KRABA: Watazukai’s New Character and the Story Behind KRABAPOWA

Polaroid collage showing KRABA on different adventures: surfing, at an electronic music festival, in the desert, in the mountains and on a tropical road
One crab. A thousand destinations. No idea what happens next.

Some creations begin with a melody. Others begin with a character.

Watazukai has always been a musical universe that is difficult to place inside a single category.

A significant part of my work takes the form of immersive instrumental albums, soundscapes and creations connected to calm, sleep and mindful listening. I enjoy building music that can transport the listener, slow things down or transform the atmosphere of a moment.

But Watazukai has never been limited to that side of music.

I have also always enjoyed creating music that is more energetic, electronic, dance-driven and sometimes completely absurd. Tracks such as Oupelaï, Cocorico EDM, Say Who’s Your Daddy?, AWESOME (Banana Club EDM) and Cat Cat Meow show that I have never been afraid of unlikely ideas.

And now, a new creature has emerged from that side of the Watazukai universe.

His name is KRABA.

In short: KRABA does not mark the arrival of EDM or absurdity in Watazukai’s music. That energy was already there. What is truly new is an original recurring character who can travel across multiple songs, styles and adventures.

1. Watazukai has never belonged to a single genre

Moving from a contemplative instrumental album to an unhinged electronic track may seem unexpected. To me, however, that freedom has been part of the project from the beginning.

Every creation has a different purpose.

Some pieces are designed as destinations: a region of the world, an atmosphere, a landscape or an emotion to explore. Others aim for a more immediate reaction: turning up the volume, moving, smiling or wondering what you just heard.

I do not see these directions as incompatible. They are simply different ways of using sound and imagination.

After all, music can sometimes support a moment of calm. It can also interrupt the seriousness of life for a few minutes.

Watazukai can build an immersive world—and drop a crab right into the middle of it.

2. Why create KRABA?

Until now, many of my most energetic or absurd songs had their own idea, atmosphere and little world.

A song would appear, its concept would exist for a few minutes, and then the next creation would open a completely different door.

With KRABA, I wanted to try something different: giving that energy a recurring face.

For the first time, a character could survive his first song. He could return with a new rhythm, a new move, a perfectly useless new power or another completely unpredictable adventure.

KRABA is not a change in musical direction. He represents a new way of connecting several creations within the same universe.

3. Why a crab?

Because a crab already looks like a living dance routine.

It moves sideways. It suddenly changes direction. It raises its claws as if it knows a dance move no one else understands.

A crab can look serious and completely ridiculous at the same time.

All it needed was a beat.

And so KRABA became a red, energetic and unpredictable crab who is far too convinced of the importance of every move he makes.

His realistic appearance deliberately contrasts with the absurd situations around him. The more unlikely the setting becomes, the more KRABA behaves as though everything is perfectly normal.

4. Does KRABA belong only to EDM?

Electronic music is his natural playground for these first appearances.

EDM, dance music, psytrance and hard dance make it possible to combine powerful rhythms, short hooks, invented words, sudden changes and an immediate visual energy.

But I do not want to trap KRABA inside a single musical genre.

His identity is built around four elements:

  • movement;
  • energy;
  • absurdity;
  • an instantly recognizable visual identity.

As long as these elements remain, KRABA could one day venture into electro-funk, techno, drum and bass, electronic rock or even a completely unexpected style.

KRABA is not a genre. He is a character and an attitude.

5. The first appearance: KRABAPOWA

The first song from this new universe is called Krabapowa.

The word did not exist. It had to be short, punchy, international and strange enough to make it feel as though something important was about to happen.

What kind of event?

No one really knows.

KRABA raises a claw. The rhythm accelerates. The energy builds. The world around him begins to change.

Then comes the cry:

KRABAPOWA!

The song does not try to explain the character in detail. It simply opens the door to his universe.

His story, movements and abilities will gradually reveal themselves through his future appearances.

6. The beginning of a new universe

KRABA does not replace any other side of Watazukai.

The immersive instrumental albums, sound therapy-related creations, narrative songs and musical experiments will all continue to exist.

KRABA simply adds a new possibility: a recurring character whose every adventure can become a song.

He may discover new moves, trigger phenomena no one asked for, appear in unlikely places and change musical styles without losing his personality.

There is no need to explain everything immediately.

For now, all anyone needs to know is that a red crab has emerged from the Watazukai universe.

And he already seems ready to make far too much noise.

The world does not always need to be understood.
Sometimes, it simply needs KRABAPOWA.

What about you?
In what completely unlikely world would you like to see KRABA appear?
